October Meeting: “45 in 45: Birds in Art”
On October 1, 2020, at 10:30 a.m., the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum director Kathy Foley and Museum educator Catie Anderson joined the monthly HLBWS meeting, via Zoom, for an interactive celebration of the renowned Birds in Art exhibition. Their presentation, 45 in 45: Birds in Art, helped participants learn how international artists, artworks, and avian subjects shaped the Woodson Art Museum. HLBWS Members and their guests viewed artworks, enjoyed stories, and shared observations while learning about this exhibition’s rich history. This unique opportunity bridged the worlds of art and science by “offer(ing) new ways of perceiving familiar birds,” said member and Book Discussion Group leader Betsy Bouchard. “Instead of binoculars, we will see through the eyes of creative artists, whose work can range from realistic presentation to interpretation, from objective to subjective renderings of a bird.”
The museum is located in Wausau, Wisconsin, and is observing the 45th anniversary of this world-renowned exhibit. One of only five museums in the country to win a 2017 National Medal, the Woodson Art Museum received the nation’s highest museum honor for significant and exceptional contributions to its community.
