Xtreme Hummingbird Xtravaganza (XHX) is a yearly event at the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory. One of the big attractions at XHX is live hummingbird banding. The birds are caught in special traps so that they can be weighed, measured, and banded by trained specialists. The data gathered via the banding and tracking procedures allows researchers to study the birds’ health and migration patterns. There will be educational booths, activities for kids, a plant sale, a nature gift store, and the opportunity to “adopt” (symbolically) a hummingbird. Tickets are $5/adult; admission is free for children ages 12 and under. This event repeats on Saturday, September 21, 2024.
