HLBWS Monthly Meeting: “Watching Wood-warblers (and Other Migrants) from Treetop to Forest Floor”

  • AgriLife Extension Service 607 North Vandeveer Street Burnet, TX, 78611 United States (map)

Each spring, roughly one out of every three birds migrating through the United States will pass through Texas. These spring migrants are the focus of a presentation that Texas Nature Trackers’ wildlife biologist Craig Hensley will give to the Highland Lakes Birding and Wildflower Society (HLBWS) during the group’s April 6 meeting.

“April is an ideal time to enjoy the natural world,” said Mr. Hensley. “Native plants are blooming, butterflies abound, and a wide variety of songbirds are migrating through the Texas Hill Country.” Peak migration is expected to take place from about the third week in April to mid-May.

In his talk, “Watching Wood-warblers (and Other Migrants) from Treetop to Forest Floor,” Mr. Hensley will share tips and tricks to identify many of the warblers and other songbirds that pass through the area each spring. Mr. Hensley advises participants to bring their favorite field guides, because there will be an identification challenge at the end!

Craig Hensley is a life-long naturalist and educator, having shared his passion for and love of the natural world with audiences from Minnesota and Nebraska to across Texas. He has served as a Texas Nature Trackers Biologist for more than three years.

Plans for the morning include an 8:00 a.m. bird walk at Haley Nelson Park, weather permitting. Mr. Hensley plans to join us for that walk. Doors at the AgriLife building will open for some social time at 9:30 a.m. The business meeting starts at 10:00 a.m. and the invited speaker presents at approximately 10:30 a.m.
