Flower Photography

Dr. Marvin Bloomquist will discuss the “how to’s” of flower photography at the January 4, 2024, HLBWS meeting. In describing his program, Marvin said, “I began photographing flowers about 20 years ago to help in their identification. With the advance of the cameras now on cell phones, flower identification from photographs has become much easier. This talk covers the basics of flower photography with both a phone and a stand-alone camera. I also will share some of the ways you can identify the flowers you photograph. Finally, I will show some of the photos I've taken of flowers on our ranch near Kingsland.”

Dr. Bloomquist is a native Austinite who retired in the Kingsland area after working for 33 years in the oil industry, primarily as a geophysicist. He is a member of the Native Plant Society of Texas and a charter member of the Highland Lakes Master Naturalists. He serves as the photographer for the Highland Lakes Master Naturalist Land Management Assistance Program (LMAP). In that capacity, Dr. Bloomquist visits clients' properties and generates catalogs of native plant photographs for the owners’ use. He also has photographed and cataloged well over 100 flowering plants on his ranch.

The HLBWS meeting will be held in the auditorium of the Burnet County AgriLife Extension Service, 607 N. Vandeveer, Burnet 78611. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m. for social time, the business meeting will start at 10:00 a.m., and Dr. Bloomquist’s talk will follow immediately.

Weather permitting, there will be a pre-meeting bird walk at 8:00 a.m. in Haley Nelson Park off Hwy. 29 in Burnet.
