October Zoom Meeting: “Much Ado about the Wild Turkey”

HLBWS member Robert Linder will be the featured speaker at our October meeting. He will present “Much Ado about the Wild Turkey.” Robert will provide scientific information about wild turkeys, including the species found in Texas, how to distinguish them based on their markings, their anatomy, common behaviors and environmental threats faced by hens and their offspring. He will discuss a public-private partnership with the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) that is using “super stocking and transfer” to boost the numbers of Eastern turkeys in Texas. Robert will demonstrate his world-renowned skills in the art of turkey calling, which is used to help draw the birds out of hiding. There are specific instruments that turkey callers use to get the birds’ attention. Mr. Linder will share tips that will help photographers to capture beautiful images of wild turkeys. He also will explain some of the turkey hunting contests or challenges sponsored by the NWTF. The detailed records kept by the organization add to the knowledge base about these beautiful native birds. Robert has served as a national adjudicator of turkey calling contests, been the Texas State President of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) and has served on that organization’s Texas State Board for over 20 years. Please note: social time will be provided beginning at 9:30 a.m. The business portion of the meeting will begin at 10:00 a.m. and the presentation will follow at about 10:45 a.m.
